Language in Literacy in the Elementary School Classroom

My name is Lindsay Graham-Carson and I have created this blog entitled: Language in Literacy in the Elementary School Classroom for University of Victoria class EDCI 302. I have worked with children, families and communities through the YM-YWCA for the past ten years. I am an avid outdoor enthusiast and have a wonderful community of friends and family.

“What do you expect English Language Arts to look like/ sound like/ be like in the Elementary School classroom?”

Look Like…

English language arts should look like fun in the elementary school classroom. Meeting all aspects of ELA as described in the Prescribed Learning Outcomes from the Intergrated Resources Package outlined by the British Columbia Ministry of Education, English language arts will draw elementary students together in a positive classroom community.

Sound like…

English language arts should sound like students engaging in discussions relevant to topics within the curriculum. Active listening should be practiced by both teachers and students. Language arts instruction will be based upon sound theory of how children learn and develop language, highlighting upon Halliday’s functions of language, specifically focusing on heuristic and personal language in combination with representative and regulatory language.

Be like…

Language arts will include: technology, children’s literature (including Canadian literature for children), language development and oracy, literacy, writing and drama! ELA will be delivered in a lively and engaging manor.
